Berlin, the capital of the Weimar Republic, was a turbulent place to live after the Great War. Hans Brown’s grandparents wanted a better life for themselves and their infant son. They immigrated in 1922 to Montana in the United States in search of a better life.
These challenges are recorded in Hans Brown’s journal entries written over a span of fifty years.
Multiple story lines in Hans' journal come together and Hans gains insight into the political and social turbulence of two different political and social struggles that occur one century apart.
Hans' journal describes his life story and the lives of his grandparents. It includes Hans' current day challenges as detailed in his recitation of the political and economic beliefs and fears of his friends in 21st-century Great Falls, Montana.
The journal also includes a series of letters written by Hans' grandmother’s sister (who remained in Berlin throughout the turmoil) and Hans’ dreams about a young Berlin couple and the challenges they faced.
The journal entries are anchored by Hans’ description of the history of the Weimar Republic and explanation of the National Socialists path to power.
